We
love Bali and the Balinese people and we hope
that some of their joy for living and passion
can be seen in the products and artifacts that
we have here....
Many
of our carvings are produced
in the central region of the
island of Bali and are made
from Soar Wood. Needless to
say, they are not factory produced.
All carvings are crafted by
family run co-operatives, usually
in their own homes. Most of
the carvers work in the same
street which you can walk from
one end to the other and see
different carvings at different
stages of completion. At on
end, for example, you might
see a carver starting out on
a simple trunk of wood with
a chainsaw or small hatchet
loosely carving out the basic
design shape. Somewhere in
the middle you might come across
a carver working on a piece
that is no more than a crude
carved trunk on one side and
a near completed carving on
the other. At the far end of
the street you might see another
carver putting the final intricate
finished detailing to a carving.
What is also interesting is
that althought they live and
work separately, all ther carvers
tend to commune for their meals
and breaks which tend to be
prepared by the women.
We
buy from a number of different
families. As these products
are hand-carved designs or
poses may vary slightly.
