About Sassak
At Sassak we sell unusual furniture and hand made crafts from India, Vietnam and Indonesia...
Sassak is named after the indigenous tribes people of Lombok in Indonesia. We specialise in unusual furniture and crafts from Indonesia, Vietnam and India, spending many weeks of the year in these countries sourcing new lines.
We are a family based business and have strong links with the countries from which we buy. We are responsible for all of our own buying and in doing so we can control who we buy from. When we buy we like to go to the workplace and see the conditions in which the employees are working - if we are not happy we simply do not do business. The majority of our suppliers are also small family based companies employing family members and, sometimes, other local village people. By buying in this way we ensure the fair price that we pay is channelled to the people who need it most, cutting out the middleman.
Our retail shop
In March 2006 our retail unit opened for business and is run by partners Andy and Rachel Mackonochie. After their success in the wholesale market they decided to open up their own shop selling their wonderful crafts to the public in Cornwall. Click here to find out more
Our concern for fair trade
Naturally, protection of the environment is an important issue for all of us. All our products come from many different suppliers in and around Indonesia and India. Wherever possible we deal direct with craftsmen and women who use materials from renewable sources and fashion them with regard for the environment. The craftspeople we deal with are masters in their respective arts and we ensure that all monies go direct to them, their families and their employees and not to fat cat conglomerates. In some cases profits go towards improving the environment of these people, such as schooling for their children. No Children are employed in any of our suppliers workshops.
